Review The Town That Dreaded Sundown :
A problematic but solid remake
The original The Town That Dreaded Sundown has become a cult classic over the years, but I found it to be rather underwhelming with some serious tonal shifts. Now we have a remake of the movie that also serves as a sequel as well with some touches of a prequel. Sounds like a handful, but it pulls it off rather successful despite some issues here.
Good: This movie thankfully has a better tone compared to the original with a consistent tone of menace throughout. The main draw of the movie is the direction which features plenty of interesting use of colors and weird camera angles that make every frame interesting and beautiful to look at. I really like the premise of the movie that combines a remake with a sequel and provides some great meta moments that don't knock you over the head with. The main actress here does a good job as the final girl and the killer is appropriately intimidating. There's also some nice callbacks to the original including some of the kills.
Bad: The movie isn't as scary as it wants to be despite some great chase sequences. There's also a love interest here that isn't that interesting and the final twist is pretty stupid that makes no sense whatsoever.
Overall, it's a good slasher movie with great visuals, but it offers anything new or memorable.
